Analysis of domains and privacy policies of the Macedonian websites reviewed by “Website of the Day” blog

The analysis of the presence of privacy policies at the reviewed Macedonian websites for the period April 2008 to February 2010, published by the Metamorphosis Foundation in the „Website of the day“ column in the daily newspaper Vreme“, is indicating that only a few of them have a privacy policy.

The Privacy Policy (PP) is a document, page or part of a page of the website, explaining how administrators handle the personal data of the visitors. PP reflects the existence of awareness about the legal restrictions and obligations in this area, and whether the company/organization has established work procedures to ensure protection.

Many Macedonian websites are not using the .mk domain, so the data for the presence of privacy policy of 63 websites is presented according to the domain:

The selection of websites for the sample is not determined by whether or not a privacy policy is present, and due to the limited number of websites covered, it cannot be considered to be a statistically representative sample for all the Macedonian websites. The reviewed websites were selected based on certain properties: quality, originality of the idea, popularity etc. and as such are recommended to the readership of the Vreme newspaper, and to the visitors of this blog.

Out of 63 Macedonian websites, only 15 have a privacy policy, i.e. 23,8% of all the reviewed Macedonian websites for the selected period. Most of the reviews are for websites that have a com.mk (21) domain or 33.33% of all the websites. Next are the websites with a .mk domain (17) - 26.9% and the websites with a .com domain (12) – 19%.
